Run, Ran, Crashed.
Sonic Runners, under siege following the worldwide release Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning. The following is a transcript from episode 3 of SonicSource.
One of the drawbacks for Runners was a issue preventing the game to appear on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Users had to access the download page via a browser link, which for some isn’t convenient.
Furthermore, another drawback is the compatibility. Android users were denied downloading the app due to their device’s incompatibility. The same message appeared on current generation smartphones and tablets with proper hardware, and operating system well over version 2.3.3, which is the lowest the app can support. For users who were able to download and access the app, there’s also another drawback. Several, several fatal errors and glitches plagued the app and infected the operation of Android devices. Evidently, Sonic Runners kept crashing on the first few seconds of start up, being called an “instant crash bug”.
Hogfather of The Sonic Stadium experienced the glitches first hand. He tested Sonic Runners on three phones, the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Sony Xperia Z3, and the Google Nexus 7.
Both three phones were analyzed on the performance of Sonic Runners and The Sonic Stadium was able to report the following:
“The Samsung Galaxy S5 & Sony Xperia Z3 crashes the moment you try to start it up, it gives the impression that the app has closed, however it’s actually still running as a background app.”
On the Sony Xperia Z3, the issue continues further
“If the app is started and left in the background, the phone will get extremely hot to touch, the battery will also drain very quickly.”
The Google Nexus 7 proved a potential physical harm against its user as reported.
“After only 2 minutes of gameplay the device gets extremely hot, so hot in fact we had to turn it off for fearing the safety of the hardware and because we were very concerned that it would become a fire hazard had we left it running, one part of the device was so hot it could have potentially burned someone.”
Thankfully, Sega of America has acknowledged the glitches on Android devices, they’ll provide an update as soon as possible. The overall performance of Sonic Runners on Android was extremely lackluster, giving the game the current rating of 3.3 out of 10 from a total of 2,802 users. About 816 reviews are one-star ratings.
Focusing now on the Apple devices, it actually performed much better than Android, even though the download page was completely removed and then restored in a few hours once news came out Sonic Runners was released worldwide. It currently has the average rating of 4 stars out of 5, from a total of 340 users.
